Feed the Mind: Give a Child in rural and urban Africa the Gift of Reading and the Promise of Literacy

“For everyone everywhere, literacy is a basic human right.” – Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary-General.

Improving literacy is essential for empowering people, eradicating poverty, reducing
child mortality, improving public health, achieving gender equality and ensuring
sustainable development and peace in the developing world. The key to all literacy is
reading. Giving children in developing countries the gift of reading is giving them the
opportunity to re-write the future of the world they live in.

Of the ten countries with the lowest literacy rates, 9 of them are in Africa

YOU CAN open Reading Rooms (mini libraries) in orphanages in Rural and Urban Africa to improve literacy, education, and self-empowerment.

If you ccollect 200 books, raise $400.00 to cover the cost of international shipping and set up and you can open 2 reading rooms. Collect 300 books, Raise $600.00 and open 3 reading rooms. You get the point.

Our goal is to open 5 Reading Rooms in 5 Orphanages in rural and urban Ghana in January 2013. That means we need to collect 500 books for children ages 0yrs to 15yrs and raise $1,000.00 to cover the cost of shipping and getting the reading rooms operational.

Together We Can Do it. We can put books in the hands of 300-600 children who otherwise may not have access to books. We can empower them to re-write their future.

Here is How…

Send us new or gently used books– You have them, your friends have them; I am talking about books you have not read since elementary, middle or high school. They are way in the back of your closet or in a box in the basement. Find them and send them to us at:

International Child Empowerment Network
8605-B Engleside Office Park Drive
Alexandria, VA 22309

At a US Post Office, ask for the Media Mail rate. Postage will cost $.37-$.43/pound depending on the weight and size of each box. On average a paperback book would weigh between 2 to 3 pounds. The maximum allowable weight for Media Mail boxes is 70 pounds, but we find that the typical (and ideal) weight for one box of books is 35-40 pounds.

Check or Money Orders should be made directly to International Child Empowerment Network and mailed to the same address above. In the memo section write “Feed the Mind.” You can also donate directly using PayPal. Please write “Feed the Mind in the comment box.”

Have a book drive

You can organize your own book drive. Collect books and raise the money to ship them to our US site and to cover international shipping. It is easy. We have created a step by step guideline to ensure you have a successful book drive. Download a step by step tool kit.

As a growing child needs nutritious food to grow physically, they also need nutrients to grow a healthy mind. Books are food for the Mind. Feed the Mind.
