Programs

A healthy body and a sound mind create a winning attitude. ICEN believes in the welfare of children and with that in mind, has created health and educational outreach programs to support our young.  ICEN’s current programs include:

Book and Literacy Club

At the Book and Literacy club, the creative abilities of children are tapped
into through the use of creative exercises. The children are divided into groupswhere they compete in debates, spelling bees and general knowledge on the books they read. Creative writing is a major part of this program, and the children are encouraged use their imagination to write short stories, poems, and plays which they share with the rest of the group. The children are rewarded with certificates and stars for the best creative work.
Motivational speakers are invited to speak to and encourage the children
during this session and there is an occasional fundamental financial literacy
program organized for the children.

Music and Arts Day Camp

The music and arts day camp is an annual 6week summer program. It is
organized during the summer (long) vacation for children to participate in
various creative activities rather than staying at home and not finding much to do. Various music, dance and choreography, photography, arts, and crafts tutors and volunteers as well as sport coaches are available to work with the kids to learn how to play a musical instrument, dance, learn a craft, paint, photography, and engage in various sporting activities. Children between the ages of 8-13 years will participate in this program. Lunch will be served and there will be a nurse on site to attend to emergencies.

Financial Literacy Session

In February 2008, children of the ICEN book and literacy club were given a
lecture on financial literacy by a representative of the Bank of Ghana. The kids were given a history on the various currencies used in Ghana, the interworkings of money and banks, and the importance of saving. Volunteers with ICEN then had an arts and craft session with the kids as part of the financial literacy session, where the children made piggy banks to use for their first banking and saving experience.
